Successors of the Suvorov Era: Representatives of Military Science and Practice in the First Half of the 19th Century
As part of the preparations for the tercentenary of Alexander Suvorov, during the St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum and the Days of Army Culture in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, a round table entitled “Heirs to the Suvorov Era: Leading Figures in Military Science and Practice in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century” will be held. It will take place on 25 September 2026 at the Military Historical Library of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, one of the country’s oldest military libraries, founded 215 years ago in St. Petersburg.
The participants will include historians from the Research Institute of Military History of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation; the Suvorov State Memorial Museum; the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library; the National Library of Russia; the Suvorov Museum in Novaya Ladoga; the State Hermitage Museum; the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps; the Central Naval Library; representatives of the Suvorov Charitable Foundation; and representatives of the libraries of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, national and regional libraries, and federal and departmental archives and museums.
The round table will feature reports devoted to Suvorov’s legacy. They will examine the influence of his ideas and experience on the development of military organization in Russia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Another point of discussion is the way Suvorov affected Field Marshal Pyotr Volkonsky, founder of His Imperial Majesty’s General Staff. Another question for discussion is preserving the military and theoretical legacy of Suvorov and Volkonsky, both of whom left a notable mark on military history, within the integrated environment of libraries, archives, and museums.
