Faith and the Stage

What is “Orthodox” cinema, and more broadly Orthodox culture? Where does the line run between culture and preaching? Are ‘popular’ and ‘crowd-pleasing’ synonymous? And what about ‘popular’ and ‘primitive’? Can high culture command a sufficiently wide audience? Which matters more for Orthodox culture: tactical marketing that meets current audience demand, or a strategic approach that shapes trends and creates new niches? The connection between eras: how to keep the classics relevant? Is it possible to continue academic traditions today, and how? We see how theological illiteracy leads to a distortion of purpose even where intentions are good. But how are spiritual guidance and theological scrutiny to be exercised without interfering with an author’s vision? Producer, author, spiritual adviser: what is the balance between the roles? Which values genuinely matter to society today? Is a separate Orthodox culture for young people needed? Where can Orthodox culture meet its audience: online cinemas, television, film, theatre?
