Education as a Cultural Project: Who Are Design Schools Training and Why?
Discussions about design education usually focus on expertise, standards, and business demands. But there is another, cultural dimension: design schools not only create specialists, but also shape individuals who embody a specific worldview, ethic, and visual culture. What kind of worldview are we conveying to students? Are we training ‘problem solvers’ or ‘creators of meaning’?
At a time when design is becoming increasingly fluid and interdisciplinary as a profession, education should serve as a space that can cultivate the cultural responsibility of the next generation.
This session will explore what kind of education is needed to ensure graduates are not only in demand but also culturally grounded. The participants will discuss which subjects in the humanities and cultural studies should be included in a modern design curriculum and how to foster a sense of connection to broader culture amongst students.
