AI in Music: Algorithms, Authorship, and New Rules in the Industry

AI today no longer merely assists in producing music but is becoming a full-fledged participant in the market: it generates tracks, imitates voices, enters the charts, and competes with human artists for the audience’s attention. A central theme of the discussion will be AI’s effect on the ecosystem of streaming services. Recommendation algorithms increasingly promote content created using neural networks, which changes the logic by which popularity is formed. It also calls into question the traditional mechanisms for selecting and promoting music. Particular attention will be given to situations in which AI tracks compete with the output of real human performers. This is creating a new conflict within the industry: musicians, producers, and rights holders speak ever more often of the erosion of the profession, the devaluation of creative labour, and unfair competition. Technology companies, meanwhile, regard AI as a tool for widening creative possibilities and democratizing music production. A separate discussion will address the labelling of content: should music created using artificial intelligence be specially marked on streaming services, and how might that affect audience perception and the competitive environment.
