Sheremetev Palace: Museum of Music 34 Fontanka River emb., St. Petersburg

This exhibition at the Sheremetev Palace explores the music that accompanied soldiers in battle
and the victories whose celebrations are inseparable from music. The centerpiece exhibits are musical instruments from the renowned collection of the Theatrical Museum. Army kettledrums, drums, cavalry lyres, serpents, trumpets, flutes, oboes, clarinets, harmonicas, accordions, and bayans—
witnesses to many battles and glorious triumphs. Pieced together, instruments from different eras form a distinctive chronicle of three centuries of Russian history, showing how music shaped soldiers’ spirit and led them into righteous battle. The instruments are presented against a backdrop of works by battle painters. The artistic core of the display is an art installation inspired by a ceremonial kettledrum chariot from the collection of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps. Its key element is a set of authentic silver kettledrums. A special audio program unfolds a sound panorama of military signals. The exhibition features items from 11 museums across Russia.
