The ancient traditions of cold weapon crafting in Bahrain are carefully preserved and passed down from generation to generation for centuries. This is facilitated not only by the official support of the country's leadership, but also by the dedication of the craftsmen themselves to their work. One of the key roles in the preservation and development of the weaponry craft has been played by the Al Sayegh family, who founded the Depaj factory more than two centuries ago. There, sabers, daggers, jewelry, and precious souvenirs are still made using traditional techniques. These items form the basis of the exhibition, together with exhibits from the National Museum of Bahrain.
In total, the exhibition features about 30 items demonstrating the evolution of the weapon craft in Bahrain. The earliest of them date back to the 18th-19th centuries, while the latest ones date back to the first quarter of the 21st century. Among them are jabbar sabers (named after the region of Al Zubarah, the ancestral home of the ruling dynasty of the Kingdom of Bahrain), muhammas daggers, nadji daggers, and others. All of them are made of gold and silver, decorated with precious stones, ivory, and Bahraini pearls.
You can also see traditional craft tools used in the creation of weapons: metal cutters, hammers, wire drawing pliers, and others. A separate group consists of items that are not related to weapons but demonstrate the skill of their creators: an incense burner, a coffee pot, and a falcon perch.
A selection of photographs accompanying the exhibition will give visitors a clearer idea of the traditional techniques used in weapon making in Bahrain.
The exhibition, which opened during the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, will be another step towards strengthening cultural ties between the Kingdom of Bahrain and Russia.
The curator of the exhibition is Vsevolod Obraztsov, head of the weapons section of the Arsenal department.
